If you’re looking for a fast-paced, strategy-packed board game that never gets old, 7 Wonders just might be the one. In this review, I’m breaking down exactly why 7 Wonders has earned a permanent spot in my collection, and why it still holds up as one of the best multiplayer games in 2025.

This game hits that magical combo of variety, replayability, and quick turns, making it perfect for groups that want a challenge without a two-hour time commitment. Personally, I tend to lean into the science (green cards) and have had pretty good luck — although I’ve definitely seen other strategies steal the win more than once.

Let’s continue into the full review, and you can decide if 7 Wonders deserves a spot in your rotation!

7 Wonders Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Fast-paced and engaging with almost no downtime

  • Multiple viable strategies (military, science, economy, wonders)

  • Gorgeous art and intuitive iconography

  • Easy to teach, hard to master

Cons:

  • Not great for 2 players (buy 7 Wonders Duel instead!)

  • Some icon confusion for first-timers

  • Very little direct player interaction (outside of military clashes)

How to Play 7 Wonders

7 Wonders mid game play with someones hand, the discard pile, coins, and army point trackers

7 Wonders is a card-drafting game played over three “Ages.” In each Age, players start with a hand of cards, choose one to play, and pass the rest to the next player — drafting in a circle.

Here’s the basic breakdown:

  1. Draft a Card: Each turn, pick one card from your hand and play it face-up, face-down (for Wonder building), or discard for coins.

  2. Build Your Civilization: You’ll gather resources, build scientific advancements, military strength, trade networks, and eventually construct your Wonder.

  3. Repeat Through Ages: The game progresses through Age I, II, and III — with stronger and more valuable cards appearing as the game goes on.

  4. Score Points: After Age III, tally points from scientific symbols, military victories, completed wonders, guilds, and more.

The kicker? Everyone plays simultaneously, so the game is fast even with 7 players.  That's one of the reasons it's a favourite of mine - we often end up playing several rounds but there's an easy option for people to join in and duck out as needed.

7 Wonders Price

At the time of writing, 7 Wonders is priced around $50 CAD, which is solid value for a game with high-quality art, premium components, and essentially infinite replay value.

It’s one of the few games that consistently hits the table without overstaying its welcome — and at that price, it’s a great investment for any game shelf.

Gameplay: 4.8 / 5

7 Wonders Game pieces set out and ready to play!

This is where 7 Wonders really shines. Games take about 30–45 minutes and the simultaneous play keeps everyone engaged throughout. No waiting 10 minutes for someone else to plan their entire economy.

The card drafting creates exciting tension and player-driven pacing. And because each hand offers different combos and possibilities, no two games ever feel the same.

You can lean into your favourite strategy or pivot depending on what cards come your way. Military powerhouse? Cultural monument-builder? Resource mogul? Choose your path — or pivot when your neighbour ruins it.

If you're looking to add an element of difficulty you can pick boards at random (everyone will have different wonder powers and resources available to them).  Alternatively, it can be fun to let everyone choose a board that suits their strategy and strengths too!

Design & Components: 4.5 / 5

The cards are large, beautifully illustrated, and colour-coded by type, which makes organizing your strategy easy on the eyes. Wonder boards are high-quality cardboard with unique bonuses and asymmetric powers.

If I’m nitpicking: the symbols can be a bit much for first-time players. A quick reference sheet goes a long way, and most people get the hang of it after a game or two.

Player Interaction: 4.0 / 5

Interaction is subtle, but definitely present. You’re drafting against your neighbors, choosing whether to block a card they might need or build up your own plans.

Military adds a direct head-to-head element between neighbouring players, and trading resources can influence your decisions too — though you don’t exchange cards directly.

Overall, it’s less cutthroat than other strategy games, which is often a good thing.

Replayability: 5.0 / 5

The variety in 7 Wonders is endless. With different Wonder boards, randomized hands, and ever-shifting player strategies, every game feels different.

There are also plenty of expansions (Cities, Leaders, Armada, etc.) if you want even more depth — but the base game is more than satisfying on its own.  I've played dozens of times and not yet felt the need to buy an expansion pack.

It's one of the few games where we consistently say, “Another Round?” the second we finish.

Is 7 Wonders Still Worth Buying in 2025?

7 Wonders board game box and playing contents

Absolutely. 7 Wonders has aged like a fine wine (or a carefully developed science infrastructure 😄). It’s fast, fun, and deeply replayable — and manages to scale for large groups without slowing down.

It hits that perfect balance of strategic depth and accessible gameplay, making it great for both casual players and competitive gamers alike. If you’re building a collection of go-to group games that don’t take forever or require massive setup, 7 Wonders is a must-have.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best strategy in 7 Wonders?

There’s no single best strategy, but science (green cards) can yield massive points if you commit early. Military and guild cards can also swing the game depending on who you're seated next to.

Can 7 Wonders be played with 2 players?

Technically yes, but the official 2-player rules aren’t ideal. If you're looking for a two-player experience, 7 Wonders Duel is the superior option.

Is 7 Wonders good for beginners?

Yes! It’s easy to learn and doesn’t require reading-heavy cards, but there’s enough depth to keep experienced players coming back.

Are the expansions worth it?

If you love the base game and want more variety, the expansions are likely fantastic. But it’s not necessary to enjoy the core experience.  You can get a lot of variety through many games without expansion packs too!
