What Could Be Better?

Let’s not sugarcoat the sap:

• With larger groups, there can be significant downtime between turns — especially if some players are deep in analysis mode.

• The modular nature means there’s a bit of rules juggling for new players (“Wait, are we playing with the garlands or not?”).

• Player pacing varies, since everyone progresses through seasons at their own rate — which can feel a bit disconnected at times.

• It takes up quite a bit of table space and can be annoying to seat everyone where they can see the options well enough and reach everything

• It is on the pricier side for board game expansions, but so is the base set up so that's to be expected and the pieces are decent quality in comparison to a lot of games.

Bellfaire isn’t my personal top pick — but it’s one of the most played games in our rotation, thanks to how much my group enjoys it. There’s a lot of strategy packed into every session, and although the pacing can drag with bigger groups, it’s perfect for casual nights when you can step away to check on dinner between turns. While I still enjoy Everdell on its own, Bellfaire has become our default setup because it adds just enough extra depth without feeling bloated. And like all Everdell games, a solid plan helps — but the right card at the right time? Total game-changer.

Overview: A Beautifully Strategic Forest With Some Timing Twists

Everdell: Bellfaire is one of the more prominent expansions in the Everdell universe, known for its gorgeous art, flexible gameplay additions, and modular features. While not everyone's top pick, it’s certainly earned a regular spot on our table—and for good reason. It brings new player powers, a larger board, and support for up to six players, among other enhancements.

It’s not the most beginner-friendly expansion, nor the fastest-paced, or easy to play on a small coffee table, but for players who enjoy a mix of planning, adaptation, and a sprinkle of luck, Bellfaire offers a compelling upgrade to the base game.

How to Play Everdell: Bellfaire (In a Nutshell)

Bellfaire is a modular expansion, which means you can mix and match which components you want to use with the base Everdell game. Key additions include:

• Player powers: Each critter type gains a unique ability, adding replayability and asymmetry. We generally do not include this portion.

• Market board: Offers more resource trading opportunities.  This is a huge bonus and always part of the board when playing with the expansion for us.

• Flower festival event: Adds a new special event goal for players to compete toward.  I don't tend to take advantage of this a lot but most players do and we always have it included when Bellfaire is set up.

• 5–6 player mode: The board stretches out (literally) to accommodate larger groups.

You still progress through the familiar four seasons—Spring to Winter—but players advance independently. So one player could be deep into Autumn while another’s just finished their Spring turn. That brings strategy… and some downtime.  Figuring out how to time your turns so that you have critters available when the places you want to play are open can be a bit of a game in and of itself!

🎲 Gameplay Feel

If you're playing Bellfaire with experienced gamers who love strategy, it really shines. The unique player powers inject fresh tension and a need to rethink old Everdell strategies. But in larger groups (especially 5–6 players), the wait time can get just a bit too Ever-long. Bellfaire isn’t a lightning-fast romp—it’s more of a cozy simmer.

That said, it’s great for casual game nights where everyone’s comfortable chatting, grabbing snacks, or even checking on dinner between turns. There’s enough strategy to keep things interesting, and enough luck that no one can plan everything perfectly.

🎨 Visuals & Components

Like all things Everdell, Bellfaire is a feast for the eyes. The new boards, critter standees, and artwork blend seamlessly into the whimsical forest aesthetic. It's cohesive, enchanting, and always earns compliments at the table.  The quality of pieces is quite good and it stands up well to repeated assembly and packing up.

⚖️ Balance & Strategy

The balance between player powers varies slightly—some powers are more directly useful than others—but overall it’s pretty tight. Success still relies on building efficient chains, seizing the right cards at the right time, and staying flexible.

This expansion rewards adaptive strategy. Those who lock into a rigid plan may struggle, while opportunists who can pivot tend to thrive. But like many Everdell sessions, a bit of card draw luck can swing the game, even if your strategy is sound.
